show business

On 19 June at the National Theatre, Farnham Maltings produced a one-day symposium in partnership with UK Theatre, ITC and Stage One. show business explored how the commercial and subsidised theatre sectors might work better together, with a focus on small to mid scale producers, theatre companies and venues.

Opening with a talk from the National Theatre’s Chief Executive Nick Starr, which discussed the ways in which the organisation has combined subsidised and commercial models of funding, the day featured a series of presentations, provocations and panels. Among the topics addressed were different approaches to producing and investment, how to combine subsidised and commercial funding streams, different possibilities for commercial exploitation, and the role of new models such as crowd-funding.
