Buckinghamshire: theatre development

Farnham Maltings, supported by the Rothschild Foundation, is leading a three-year project to facilitate more theatre across Buckinghamshire. Whether in village halls, libraries, museums or pubs the project will work with rural communities to expand the range of cultural activity happening across the county, and create the environment for live performance to flourish in non-theatre spaces. With Essex Cultural Diversity Project three new pieces of participatory art will be commissioned that take their inspiration from Buckinghamshire, hosting new and diverse artists in the county.
To support a programme of work in libraries, house is teaming up with the project to deliver its successful Pitch Up initiative, with a special focus on libraries and inviting artists to share creative ideas for working in these spaces.

Pitch Up: Library Edition
20 March 2020

As the inimitable JK Rowling wrote, “When in doubt go to the library”; so house is following Hermione’s lead and hosting its next Pitch Up amongst the shelves and books of Chesham Library on Friday 20 March.

Public libraries are free to enter and welcoming to all, frequently described as safe spaces within the community. They’re also changing; no longer a place of shh and quiet reading, most libraries offer a range of services from bounce-and-rhyme sessions for toddlers to computer skills tutoring and reading groups. They often share spaces with other public services and are recognised as a democratic places with a wide reach, often into communities that arts venues can only dream of connecting with. As a result, many partnerships have formed to enable libraries to present creative programmes of work.

Pitch Up: Library Edition takes house’s tried and tested pitching model and will present pitches from artists and companies making theatre specifically with libraries in mind. As well as a keynote speech from Sue Williamson, Director of Libraries for Arts Council England, there will also be contributions from library services, touring support organisations and venues who present within local libraries. The aim is to spark new connections and conversations.

Pitch Up: Library Edition is produced with Farnham Maltings and Creative Arts East
