I’d been wondering for a while what this week’s blog post should be about – there is so much happening in the world of the arts at the moment, not least the shocking news yesterday afternoon that The Brewhouse in Taunton is to go into administration, effective immediately.
This morning, my attention was drawn to a Canadian article titled “Don’t support the arts”. My immediate reaction was disbelief – would someone in the industry really be writing something like this, particularly in the current financial climate? But actually, it’s an excellently written article, and well worth a read.
“Basically, what I’m saying is that we don’t want people to support the arts. We want people to have their minds blown and their worldviews shaking; we want them to have the kinds of experiences that only art can provide.” – Peter Hemminger
Is ‘support’ really the verb to use, or does it imply too much pressure? How would do you think you would describe it?
