There are plans for this inspiring Grade II listed building to be renovated and redeveloped as an arts and heritage centre. Local charity Horton Chapel Arts & Heritage Society has been set up specifically for this purpose and the group is actively applying for funding to support the project.
The new performance space has been designed to seat 120 people.
The building is at the centre of the former Epsom Psychiatric Cluster. More than 10,000 so-called ‘pauper lunatics’ from London were forcibly relocated to purpose-built hospitals in Epsom in the early 20th century. Horton Chapel served staff and patients for almost 100 years, being partitioned in the 1960s to create a pioneering music therapy centre.
Fundraising and conversion work will take 2-3 years, with first performances in the renovated space expected 2019/2020.
