Root Theatre’s Script Club is an ambitious new project which aims to take high quality new writing to new audiences. A professional playwright writes a play for the local community where they grew up. The finished play is then produced locally and toured to that community, performed in spaces like community centres and schools, targeting ‘hard to reach’ audiences. After each performance the writer and director lead a playwriting workshop, encouraging the audience to begin a deeper interest in new writing and to explore their own creativity.
This project will enable Root Theatre to bring Natalie Mitchell (Royal Court Young Writers, BBC Writer’s Academy) back to her home town of Gillingham where, supported by The Brook Theatre, Chatham, ship venue LV21 and Ideas Test she will undertake an initial period of research and development to seed ideas and find producing partners for a new play.
