Audience development project tender opportunity

Notice of open project tender:

house Audience Development Consultant-Researcher.

Role: develop an audience development plan for house theatre, an Arts Council England-funded initiative delivered by Farnham Maltings in Surrey.

Location: a combination of field research across 6-10 venues in south east England, and desk-based research from home/organisation, with 2 meetings at Farnham Maltings.

Project Fee: £8,000 (dependent on project proposal and experience) + £500 travel expenses

Status: freelance consultant-researcher

Reporting to: Emma Gosden (house Marketing Manager) and Alex James (Deputy Director, Arts)

Period of contract: fixed term project. Audience development plan to be completed by 31 March 2019; Project resources to be completed by 30 June 2019


house is an ACE-funded initiative to improve the range, scale and quality of contemporary theatre presented to audiences in south-east England. By supporting performing arts venues with resources, advice and networking opportunities, and supporting theatre companies with tour-booking expertise, house has contributed to a revitalised touring theatre ecology in the region.

To continue to do this well, and better, house is now embarking on an audience development review, resulting in the creation of a revised audience development plan for 2019-2022.

To measure house’s impact on venues and audiences in the south east of England, the contract-holder will undertake mapping with a cross-section of house venues by interviewing teams, analysing audience data and evaluations, and CRM strategies.

Using this information, coupled with desk-based research including an audit of box office or data collection solutions across the venue network, and regional audience trends, they will collaborate with the house and Farnham Maltings team to produce an audience development plan so that house can better support venues to confidently grow and sustain their audiences to 2022 and beyond.

The plan may include the creation of an audience development toolkit, guide or training programme for venues, and will scope out a compliant method of gathering house data into the future.

We are inviting individuals or organisations to apply to tender for the contract, which will commence in February 2019, and continue through spring 2019.
